Artist Bio

Mercy McGee is a multidisciplinary artist raised in Alaska & Puerto Rico currently practicing in Texas. Having moved around to so many different places, it’s no surprise that she loves change and new experiences. This presents itself in her art as a passion for learning new skills and mediums; her work spans painting, drawing, ceramics, woodworking, and more. Mercy’s commitment to art started as a social tool. In Puerto Rico, she and her friends would pass drawings back and forth during Spanish sermons at church. Seeing what her friends made inspired her to spend time practicing and coming up with new ideas. When she finished high school, she was torn between pursuing psychological research or fine art. Scared of the cost of getting a PhD or going to an art school, she decided to pursue teaching through SAU’s studio art program. Since then, she has absolutely fallen in love with working with young children. She has found it to be a rewarding challenge that combines psychology, art, and philosophy. In her art, she explores any subject that excites her. A few of these topics are daily life, fear, and questions about human perception. Mercy has had her work displayed in the Magnolia Arts Center, the Brinson Art Gallery, and the Texarkana Regional Arts & Humanities Council (TRAHC) and has won 1st place in the 6th Annual Juried SAU Student Art Show, as well as People’s Choice in the 30th Annual TRAHC Student Juried Exhibition. In her next series, Mercy plans to explore absurdist philosophy by studying the work of Albert Camus and combining his ideas with her personal experience to create energetic mixed media drawings that dramatize daily tasks and encapsulate the phrase "One must imagine Sisyphus happy."
